The National President,

Obafemi Awolowo Alumni Association,

OAU,

Ile-Ife.

Dear Sir,

AN APPEAL TO GREAT IFE ALUMNI IN THE DIASPORA IN PARTNERSHIP FOR HOSTING 24th NUGA GAMES IN OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE, IN 2012

The 23rd NUGA Games was hosted by the University of Benin, Benin in March 2011. The NUGA Council considered the bids for the 24th edition of the Games and Obafemi Awolowo University has been approved to host the 24th edition in 2012. By this decision, Obafemi Awolowo University is expected to put all logistics in place for the organization of one of the most prestigious collegiate sports fiesta in Africa within the time frame of about twelve months from now.

As the President of the Alumni Association of our Great University world-wide, I have found it imperative to formally pass on this information to you even though I am aware that you are already privy to the information as a member of the current Council of the university. I also know that you are aware that we shall be counting on your support for the drive towards our fund-raising efforts nation-wide so that we can have a successful hosting befitting the enviable image and status of our university. This letter of appeal is, therefore, a special one for the purpose of involving the entire alumni of our university in the Diaspora and who I know shall be happy to hear of this development. I trust they shall gladly accept this invitation as a clarion call for the advancement of their alma mater which we all are proud of and cherish.

There are 15 Sports to be covered in the Games involving both government and private universities numbering at least 90-100. We are expecting an estimated 5,000 officials and at least 20,000 athletes, male and females. Besides, we expect the Games to attract the presence of spectators and supporters of the participating universities and which may be more than 200,000 spread over 14 days of exciting sporting, socio-economic and cultural activities during the main run of the Games during which time we expect more than 1,000 journalists (local and international) of the electronic and print media for coverage of events before and at the Games village.

Please permit me here to draw your attention back to the good old days when our university used to excel in collegiate sporting events and for which we also earned the accolade of Greatness for our university. Those feats were not by accident but the realization of the vision of the founding fathers of our university who placed a high premium on sports as an important instrument for the development of intellectual human capacity as well as a means for good mental and physical fitness and well-being for a high human productivity. They set aside a large piece of land to accommodate all sports in a multi-functional Sports Centre, the first of its kind in Africa. That edifice is more than forty years old with little or nothing added ever since. You will agree with me that the 24th NUGA Games should be an opportunity for us to live up to the expectation and vision of the founders of our university by making efforts to update as well as add to the facilities at the Sports Centre to meet up with the current trends and standards in general, and in particular the expanded population of staff and students currently in the university and beyond. This would require enormous funds beyond what is being expected from government and the university.

We have appraised the current state of our Sports Centre and other sporting facilities in the university and packaged our needs into convenient units as presented in the attachment to this letter. We shall be looking forward to donations in support of the various packages but, in addition, we shall be pleased to receive donation of fitness and exercise equipment (used, ex-showroom, or new and as many and varied as possible). We estimate that we would need up to ten billion naira (N10,000,000,000) only for materials, construction and upgrading of facilities and logistics to host the Games in a manner that it will remain in the minds of all for a long time thereafter in the tradition of our university as a role model for others to emulate. Besides, we are committed to ensuring that the hosting takes place in 2012 thus adding glamour to the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the establishment of our university.

Professor G.O. Babalola

PROJECT PACKAGES AND BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR THE HOSTING OF THE 24TH NUGA GAMES IN OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE, IN THE YEAR 2012: A CALL TO OAU ALUMNI FOR SPONSORSHIP AND SUPPORT

We have a Sports Centre which has facilities for most of the sports to be covered in the Games competition. They were constructed about forty years ago hence most of them will require extensive rehabilitation/modification(upgrading) and expansion to meet modern standards and capacity. Besides, some other facilities such as swimming pool, fitness facility/gym, handball courts, hockey pitches are to be constructed as they are currently not in place.

You will agree that “state of the art” facilities and complementing infrastructure and functional utilities are sine qua non for an eventful, glamorous and scenic successful hosting of a carnival such as the NUGA Games. Our projections are thus derived from our desire to organize the 24th NUGA Games that will go into record as the best for some time to come and in the tradition of Obafemi Awolowo University as a Great institution of higher learning taking the lead as a centre of excellence for developments in academics, research, functional human resources and projection of African culture and heritage.

Overall, we project a fiscal requirement of ten billion naira only (N10,000,000,000:00) for infrastructure and resource requirements including logistics, medical, security, environmental and safety elements among other features associated with sports gala. Some of the funds are expected to be provided by some appropriate organs of Federal and State governments, friends of the university and alumni world-wide but a substantial part is still being expected through corporate partnership and philanthropists hence we are putting forward these packages for your perusal and generous support. The whole concept has been put in convenient packages for ease of making choices and effective implementations. We, therefore, seek your consideration of the various projects and to make your choice(s) of which to sponsor and brand as previously stated in the clarification of sponsorship categories above.

There are 16 distinct project packages (listed in the Table below) that are central to our dream of a successful and eventful hosting. We look forward to your favorable consideration of our proposal while we eagerly anticipate welcoming you into our flag ship on the journey to 24TH NUGA GAMES OAUIFE 2012.

PLEASE ACCEPT OUR REGARDS
